You have big plans for a special dinner. You grab all the groceries you need to make it happen, turn on your stove, and… nothing. Your electric stove burners are not working.
Why does this happen? What can you do to fix it?
Don’t panic. You should be able to always rely on your stove to be ready and willing to cook whatever is on the menu. However, should the burners stop working – it may not be as big of a deal as it may seem. Here are 4 reasons your electric stove burners aren’t working.
1. There May Be an Issue With the Power Source
If all of your burners are not working, you may have an issue with the power source. Nearly all electric stoves have individually working burners. That means when one is out, they shouldn’t all be out. That’s why if all burners are out, perhaps the entire stove or range is not receiving power.
Check the circuit breaker and make sure power is flowing to the range. If it is, then check the power cord. Make sure that it is securely plugged into the outlet and then take a look at how it connects to the range — does it look ok? Loose? Is corrosion present?
2. The Heating Element May Not Be Functioning
Each of your burners has its own heating element. So when one burner is out, it could very well be the heating element. Make sure the coils are connected securely and that nothing is damaged or bent. You are looking for blisters, breaks, or burn spots on the coil.
Sometimes replacing the heating element can solve the issue with your burner.
3. It May Have a Faulty Burner/Selector Switch
Just as your burners each have their own heating element, they each have their own switch, as well. If it goes faulty, there will be no flow of electricity to the unit. And that means no power to the coils and no heat produced from your element.
Keep in mind that sometimes a faulty burner switch only malfunctions on high heat settings due to the increase in power. You may still be able to use the burner at lower temperatures. If this is what is happening, it is a good indicator that it may be the burner/selector switch.
4. Loose Wires Could Be To Blame
There are a lot of wires in your stove, whether for each burner or the power connection in the back. Any loose or burnt wire could lead to a faulty burner that won’t work. Take the time to inspect the wiring. Or, call in the professionals.
