You see it happening in slow motion, but you can’t stop it. That thing that you told the kids to stop throwing goes hurling toward the oven and lands right in the middle of the glass door. The sound of the glass cracking sends a shiver down your spine.

Whether that’s exactly how it happened or something else caused the problem, seeing a crack in the glass door of your oven can be worrisome. You may worry that your oven will not work and that the fix will be expensive. Some people may even think that they need a whole new oven.

If you’re in this situation, try not to stress about it too much. You can fix the glass door of a convection oven, so there’s no need to shop around for a new appliance. Better yet, these solutions are relatively inexpensive, so don’t worry about a massive repair bill.

Can You Use Your Oven If the Door is Cracked?

Some places will say that it’s ok to use an oven that is cracked so long as the crack is on the inner layers and you don’t use temperatures above 350 degrees Fahrenheit. However, manufacturers recommend stopping using the appliance if there is any crack anywhere.

We always recommend that you follow manufacturer guidelines, as they are meant to keep you safe. Furthermore, using an appliance improperly could invalidate any warranty you have. Warranties can help keep your maintenance costs down.

How to Repair a Cracked Oven Door

To repair an oven with a cracked glass door, you need:

  • A glass panel that properly fits
  • Special double-sided tape made for appliance repair
  • A padded surface
  • A screwdriver

First, you will need to remove the oven door entirely. The ways to do this vary by model. In general, you will need to release the locks on either side of the door, partially close the door, and then slide it off. If you’re not sure how to remove the oven door, consult your user manual.

Then, lay the oven door on a padded surface to prevent more cracks. Remove all of the screws that secure the inner layer of the door in place. Don’t forget the screws on the bottom of the door.

Once the door is opened up, you can remove the damaged layer of glass. Use the double-sided tape to affix the new glass panel into the proper place. Then, reattach the screws to put the door back together. Put the door back on the oven and check to be sure it’s secured properly.
